#Best lightweight linux distros for older computers manual
It runs great on my i5 2011 iMac 4G ram with the original hdd.but it's a more like Gentoo/Arch/*BSD in that you may need to read the manual to get things working as opposed to everything working out of the box or a few clicks away. I'm a big fan of Void and I think it fits for lightweight & customizable. If you can cope with something like i3 or openbox in place of a full desktop environment you will free up some cpu & gpu cycles for games and have the opportunity to customize it to fuck and gain karma on r/unixporn. I'd opt for something light with a basic window manager instead of a full desktop environment. Both should be pretty easy out of the box but AntiX should give that little bit more resources left for gaming.Īs the other poster mentioned, Mint is usually a safe bet but don't go Cinnamon. MX Linux is aimed at middleweight and AntiX aims for lightweight. KDE is a very customizable desktop environment but it's not superlight. Distros like Debian or Arch will provide a clean base you can build on.
